Job Summary:
As the Automation Engineer you will work as part of a team to design, install, monitor, and develop manufacturing equipment and assembly lines in the factory. You will also program and troubleshoot in structured text language using the IEC 1131-3 PLC programming structure and work to integrate the entire manufacturing process. This ranges from production to supply. The aim is to allow the maximum volume of high-quality product to be produced at the lowest cost and in the shortest time.

Generally you will be responsible for a project from start to finish, rather than focusing on one part of the process. Tasks vary but will typically include:
  • designing, developing, and installing plant control systems
  • troubleshooting and programming using IEC 1131-3 PLC programming structure
  • providing full life-cycle support for PLC systems
  • updating automation documentation (functional analysis, manuals,)
  • resolving day-to-day automation issues 
  • translating user requirements in a functional design and technical concept
  • liaising with designers, researchers and engineering consultants
  • attending production meetings and forecasting production requirements
  • calculating production costs that include equipment, time and labor
  • deciding on the effective use of resources, e.g. raw materials, equipment and staff
  • producing maintenance schedules
  • testing systems are working correctly and identifying, investigating and repairing any system faults
  • discussing and evaluating systems failures with the plant manager and non-technical personnel
  • supervising the work of manufacturing engineers and maintenance staff
  • overseeing the installation, repair and re-assembly of equipment
  • demonstrating new and existing equipment to engineers, support staff and the plant manager
  • investigating environmental hazards as well as conducting safety tests and removing potential hazards
  • meeting with managers to discuss methods of improving the productivity of existing systems, taking into consideration the use of the latest technology
  • sourcing new suppliers of industrial equipment
  • testing, monitoring and evaluating new mechanical equipment
  • establishing and implementing a quality culture within the manufacturing environment
  • ​visiting other production sites

  • Bachelor’s degree (manufacturing systems engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, process technology, or similar); Master’s degree is a plus
  • At least 5 years of experience (8-12 years would be ideal)
  • Must have knowledge of IEC 1131-3 PLC programming structure; direct experience with Structured text programming is a must
  • Experience programming Beckhoff TwinCat 2 PLCs is highly desired
  • Experience programming Siemens S7-200 or Omron PLCs is a plus
  • Career focus on machine design and controls
  • Ability to reverse engineer code with zero documentation a must
  • Detailed knowledge of manufacturing processes and process control systems on site
  • Knowledge of electrical and instrumentation equipment 
  • Problem solving skills
  • Conceptual thinking ability. Can translate customer requirements into technical solutions
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills to manage multiple/concurrent projects
  • Very good communication skills on multiple levels (supervision, operators, maintenance, IT)
  • Works independently and responsible without close supervision. Must be able to take full responsibility
  • Basic IT skills (software, database, networking, operating systems, security/IP)
  • Be able to quickly adapt to new technologies
